WHALE WATCHING

When: July, August & September

Humpback whales travel up to 8,5,00 km every year to reach tropical waters to mate and give birth to their young. Join us to witness these giants of the sea up close. Our goal is to enjoy the wonder of seeing adult whales and calves play and interact with each other, while avoiding any disturbance or negative impact to the animals. Though the probability of seeing humpback whales is high, we stress the importance of patience during this activity as one can never totally predict animal behavior.

FISHING

When: Year-round / High season: April & May

Type of fish you may catch:

Hammerjack, grouper, red grouper, snapper and snook (year-round)
Swordfish, marlin, tuna and mahi-mahi (high season)

Learn how to fish like a local using a Yo-Yo reel. Or, if you are skilled at fishing, you are welcome to bring your equipment and fish all day among the few boats in sight.

Though you can fish here year-round due to the large variety of pelagic fish, the high season is from April to May when the Humboldt current brings a high volume of fish.

Take a quick course with one of our Morromico guides or come prepared with your own equipment for a fun day of fishing. Water and snacks are provided. You can either catch and release or we are happy to prepare your catch of the day.

HIKING

Discover our pristine beaches and tropical jungles. Morromico offers hikes for all skill levels and interests that range from a few hours to a full day. Explore the mystery of the jungle and experience the biodiversity of the rainforest. Our hikes also offer the opportunity to bird watch and observe a variety of plants and insects that only an expert guide can show you. Our guided walks are an unforgettable experience our guests truly enjoy.

Hike to a panoramic view of the volcanic coast of the Pacific Ocean

What you may see:

Giant trees, bromeliads, orchids, fungi and infinite types of other interesting plant life. Also, a variety of frogs including the poison dart frog, birds such as toucans, woodpekers and more. If you are lucky you may even hear or see the howler monkey!

After breakfast, we will collect our gear and head to the northern side of the beach. The path entrance is next to the Morromico waterfall from which point we will enter the tropical rainforest and begin our ascent. We will see a variety of plants and animals as we make our way up 250 meters above sea level to the Copete de Pava overlook. Here, we will take in the breathtaking volcanic coast of the Pacific Ocean. After a short break, we will begin our return to The Lodge in time for lunch.

Biologist’s Walk

DAY TRIPS

RIO JURUBIDA & EMBERÁ NATIVE COMMUNITY EXPEDITION

Only 15 minutes by motor boat is Rio Jurubida where we begin our expedition as we navigate through different mangroves and rainforest filled with a vast array of tropical birds and flowers. One hour later, we reach the native Emberà community of Jurubida. Welcomed into their main house, we learn about their culture, system of symbols and worldviews. A guide from the community will show us around the village and will share with us their arts and crafts.

UTRÍA NATIONAL NATURAL PARK

Located 25 minutes north of Morromico, the Park is filled with many places to explore. Upon arrival to the main facilities, park rangers provide visitors with an overview of the special ecosystems in this region and the importance of the park to the territory. One of the highlights of this day is the walk on an elevated bridge that crosses through swamps and jungle. Hummingbirds, toucans, orchids, and during high tide, fish and crabs swimming along the roots of the mangroves, are some of the wonderful sightings on this walk that ends at the beach on the calm waters of the ensenada. Later on, we take a short boat ride to one of the islands nearby called Playa Blanca. Named after the coral reefs surrounding it, this is an ideal place for snorkeling. At the end of the day we return to the Lodge.

COQUÍ - FLAVORS & HISTORY OF THE PACIFIC

An hour boat ride from Morromico is the township of Coquí, well-known for having the best gastronomy in the area. Here we visit Zotea restaurant, a community project that brings together the best cooks in town and boasts a greenhouse, providing a farm-to-table dining experience. Later, we explore the “Bohío de Saberes” (Teepee of Knowledge), a space dedicated to preserving ancestral knowledge from the Afro-Colombian and Indigenous populations of the region. A local guide will explain their fishing techniques, music, medicinal plants, agriculture and arts & crafts . This is a truly enjoyable cross-cultural experience. Reservation required.
